How does this happen?
I was driving to work this morning and feeling down. There was a Tim Ferriss podcast with Henry Shukman playing and I was paying extra attention this morning. The sun wasn't shining, traffic was unusually light, I had plenty of gas, there wasn't much to distract me from this Podcast. Mr. Shukman was talking about his experience with a boat in the setting sun and what happened as he was on the beach and had an 'awakening'. He is a Zen teacher and was sharing a lot of good information about transcendental meditation and his latest project, 'Open Loving'. Then he said something that I caught, about a book, by Natalie Goldberg, called 'Writing Down the Bones'. I have been thinking about writing a lot lately, and how I love it. I have also been trying to meditate, thinking about Buddhism and spirituality.
Later at work I was taking a break and reading from 'Bird by Bird' by Anne Lamott. I love this book. She's quirky and funny and everything you'd be expect from a really good English teacher, 'AKA by Mrs Armstrong from high school, thank you very much'. I was reading the chapter about school lunches. Her take on a simple thing like this really struck me. The way she was able to guide her class to write when they were convinced it wasn't possible is awe inspiring to me. Well after this exercise she remembered raspberry jam, it's terrible nasty 'Body-Snatcher' jam, with too many seeds per spoonful. Funny because I love it. I love apricot too; Anne, I am a father and that line was hilarious to me. Well, she just had to mention Natalie Goldberg didn't she. She had listened to her speak once and when someone asked her for the best possible writing advice she could give. She help up a pad of paper and pantomimed writing with a pen using her finger.
